4 Speech Language Pathology Trailblazers

Happy International Women’s Month! We’re kicking things off here in the blog with a celebration of 4 women pioneers in the field of Speech Language Pathology. These women helped to shape how we approach our craft and understand our patients. We have so much to thank them for. Let’s begin.

Edna Hill Young

One of the first to ever do it, Edna Hill Young was known for developing the moto-kinesthetic method of speech therapy for children. Her developments in speech therapy came from her own experiences having difficulties speaking. She opened various schools aimed to help children and adults with speech disorder. (1)

Gina Grandchamp-Milan

No Mt. Rushmore of Speech Language Pathology would be complete without our very own founder Gina Grandchamp-Milan. Gina Grandchamp-Milan M.S. CCC SLP has made strides in the lives of so many in the South Florida community. Gina opened the doors to South Florida Speech Solutions in 2008, and since then have been offering services ranging from school, home, location-based, and teletherapy. Get to know Gina.

What a great group of women!

An interesting fact before we go. Did you know currently trending poet Amanda Gorman, who gave a moving recital of her poem “The Hill We Climb” during the latest Presidential Inauguration, battled with speech and auditory processing issues growing up? Her mother says, “She had trouble expressing herself, but she was always advanced in her thought”. (4)

Speech disorders are more common than we think. They might even sound all too familiar to some of you reading this. If so, don’t hesitate to call us at 305-962-4682 or email us at info@southflspeech.com. The sooner therapy is started during a child’s development, the more successful the treatment is.

The women listed have all been instrumental in advancing Speech Language Therapy and it is because of them South Florida Speech Solutions and speech language therapy as a whole has continued to break barriers. Learn more about our speech language pathology services. We are here for you.
