What Does a Speech Screening Consist of?

We always talk about how you can come to South Florida Speech Solutions for a speech screening, so we wanted to take the time to explain what they were and what to expect from them. We hope you find the following information helpful.

A Speech-Language Screening at South Florida Speech Solutions lasts about 15-20 minutes and they are offered for free. That’s right, a screening that could change your life or the life of your child for the better is offered for free and doesn’t even last that long. We want to help you and/or your child feel absolutely welcomed. The screening is a conversation we have with our patients where we observe the individual potentially affected by a speech-language challenge. This is step 1.

After the screening, the therapist typically meets with the parent of the child, patient or caregiver and further treatment is then discussed according to what we find in the preliminary round. Once this has taken place, a speech evaluation takes place and treatment begins. A speech evaluation isn’t free, but it is a way for the speech pathologist to gain deeper knowledge into what plagues the patient's speech. Here we identify a number of things such as the fluency of speech, how clear they can project their voice if any, how the patient communicates socially, and how in depth their vocabulary is.

After the speech evaluation the speech pathologist in charge will then have a more clear understanding of what exactly is present in the patient and how to treat it. Not everyone gets the same results, every patient is different. We encourage our patients and the parents of our patients to take the journey with us with a positive attitude and understanding. Patience is key when combating a speech problem, but our success rate shows that it is worth it. You can read some of our customer testimonials to get a sense of our style and success rate.

Another point we bring up often is how early you should bring in your child for a screening. In some states it is even recommended by their department of education before kids begin kindergarten. This is because of what we always say, the earlier a problem is identified in a child, the earlier we can begin to tackle it and make it better. Time is of the essence and kids' minds are like sponges. They soak up any bit of information presented to them. If the information will help them get over their speech hurdles it’s a win-win for all parties involved.
